Frequently Asked Questions

What are the issues you will address?

The issues that I care about include:

  • Affordability: All residents deserve to be able to build a life, raise a family, and age in place in Montclair.
  • Health and Well-Being: I will support programs and departments that can enhance the health and well-being of residents, such as assistance with public pool access/membership, and senior services.
  • Transparency and Trust: Transparency in the annual budget process and spending, and restoring civility and trust in local government.
  • Local Business: Supporting local business and exploring ways to expand non-residential tax revenue.
  • Environment: Building climate resilience through actions such as improving parks and other green spaces, and making our streets more walkable and bikeable.
  • Inclusion and Belonging: Fostering a greater sense of connection, safety, belonging, and inclusivity among all residents.

What are your Guiding Principles?

  • Make thoughtful decisions based on data, research, and resident input.
  • Follow required and proper procedures.
  • Foster connection through communication and listening.
  • Look at issues and policy questions through an equity lens, with an eye to preserving and enhancing the diversity of Montclair.
  • Make policies responsive to the community as a whole and engage key stakeholders. Be as transparent as possible in communication, especially when key decisions are made.
  • Ensure fiscal responsibility and accountability.
  • Ensure township departments are managed efficiently and are responsive to community members.

What prompted you to run for Councilor-At-Large?

I ran for Councilor-at-Large because I wanted to give back to this community that I care about so much and that has given so much to me and my family, in a different way. You, the people of Montclair deserve leadership that reflects the best parts of Montclair and the values of its people. A governing body that leads with empathy and kindness, looks out for Montclair’s residents, has a clear strategy and plan to execute that strategy, works hard, stays engaged, and is responsive to everyone in the community. I believe I can help build such a governing body.

Why were you part of the Together Montclair Slate?

I was honored to have ran alongside Dr. Renee Baskerville (for Mayor), Shivaun Gaines (for First Ward), and Rahum Williams (Third Ward).

Dr. Baskerville has a long history of public service in Montclair, including as Fourth Ward Councilor. Shivaun Gaines brings decades of experience working on complex legislation and education policies, and most recently served as Director of Government Relations at Montclair State University. Rahum Williams brings a wealth of experience in the finance sector and a passion for community advocacy.

We bring a variety of skills and differing perspectives, yet we find common ground in our priorities. First and foremost, we share a commitment to making informed decisions and working in the best interest of the people of Montclair. We are also committed to leading with civility, respect, and kindness. Together, we can build bridges for Montclair’s future.
